Share your story! Be a part of history!
Do you have a story to tell? A memory to share? A photo to show and be remembered?
Seniors Stories of BWG aims to preserve and share the unique personal stories of BWG residents age 55 and older.
Local seniors can submit their stories in any format (including writing, audio, video, art, and photography) to be featured in an exhibit both in the Library and online.
Submitted stories will be preserved in the Local History Collection for future generations to learn from and enjoy!
What kinds of stories?
Stories can include:
- Portraits of loved ones
- Memories from your childhood
- Photos of your garden
- Interviews with your friends
- Your favourite spot in Town
- How you came to BWG
- A favourite recipe
- Videos of your daily life

Seniors Stories Workshops
Seniors Stories of BWG provides workshops to help residents age 55 and older develop skills that will help them to express, record, and share their unique personal stories.
All the workshops are free. You are welcome to take part in the workshops without obligation to contribute your stories to the Seniors Stories project.
Genealogy for Seniors - Registration is full for this workshop
Tuesdays, October 22 - November 26 • 1 - 2 p.m.
Learn how to navigate digital tools that will help you put together your family tree! Barrie-based genealogist Nancy Lee leads this free six-week workshop that provides an introduction to genealogy with a focus on using digital platforms and resources.
Building Blocks of Photography
Mondays: October 28 and November 4 • 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Bradford-based photographer Jim Craigmyle leads this two-part workshop introducing the building blocks of photography for seniors. Come with your own camera, or practice with a lender camera at the Library. Registration required.
Family Portraits: Memoir Writing - Cancelled
Wednesdays: October 30 - November 27 • 1 - 3 p.m.
Join Laurie Laing as she leads a five-week writing workshop including dedicated writing time, constructive sharing/feedback and short writing lessons with a focus on memoir writing. You don’t need an idea ready to start, only the desire to write! Registration required.
Podcasting 101
Friday, November 15 • 1 -2:30 p.m.
In this ninety-minute presentation, Lead Podcast Founder Amanda Cupido shares an introduction to podcasting: what it is, where to find them, how to make them, and the power of audio storytelling. Registration required.

Mondays: November 18 and December 2 • 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Jim Craigmyle leads this two-part workshop introducing how to take a compelling portrait photograph with a shoe-string budget. Come with your own camera, or practice with a lender camera at the Library. Learn easy ways to create the setting for a beautiful portrait! Registration required.
Remember This: Introduction to capturing oral histories
Friday, November 29 • 1 - 2:30 p.m.
In this one-hour workshop, Lead Podcast Founder Amanda Cupido introduces her award-winning podcast initiative Remember This. Remember This is an interactive and easy-to-use software that allows anyone to capture the oral stories of those they love and transform them into a shareable audio file. Registration required.
Smart Shots: Mastering Smartphone Videography
Wednesday, December 4 • 12 - 1 p.m.
Filmmaker Tom Strnad of The South Georgian Bay Media Association introduces the basics of using smartphones and iPads, including fundamentals and techniques for capturing quality footage. Registration required.
Preservation of Family Archives
Friday, December 6 • 12 - 1 p.m.
During this one-hour drop-in workshop, BWG Local History Assistant Samantha Firman shares best ways to care for and preserve a personal or family archive. This will include best practices for digitizing older media (i.e. VHS, slides, cassettes) as well as best practices for preserving sensitive documents and photographs. Registration required.
Cut to Perfection: Video Editing 101 in DaVinci Resolve
Wednesday, December 11 • 12 -1 p.m.
Tom Strnad from the The South Georgian Bay Media Association introduces professional video editing software for iPads, covering fundamental editing techniques to create cohesive and engaging videos. iPads will be available for use during the workshop. Registration required.
Social Media for Seniors
Friday, December 13 • 12 - 1 p.m.
During this one-hour drop-in workshop, BWG Library Local History Assistant Samantha Firman provides training and support for navigating Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Registration required.
Chess Night

Free from Canadian Hearing Services
Canadian Hearing Services offers free counselling services and supports to people aged 55 and over who have hearing loss, to help improve communication with family, friends, and service providers; stay involved in social activities; and remain safe and independent at home.
Services are provided by hearing care counsellors in an accessible and safe environment, including home visits, in office appointments, or virtually.
