About the Project
Suspended slightly above visitors to the library and facing a small emerging urban forest that will one day mature to benefit human and more-than-human life, the assemblage creates a poetic parallel between the leaves of a book and those of a tree. Collaboratively constructed from salvaged books and natural pigments transferred from fallen leaves, the work reflects Price’s commitment to UN/making as a creative practice that supports environmental care and repair.
As an interactive installation, the artist invites community members to write poems or letters to—or on behalf of—trees on handmade paper, which may be mailed, published, and/or planted in the spring.
About the Artist
Dr. Jill Price is an award winning interdisciplinary Canadian artist, curator, educator, and writer. Grateful to be living and working on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe peoples, Price earned her BFA and BEd from Western University and a PhD from Queen's University.
As Artist in Residence at the BWG Public Library, Dr. Price will engage community members in an exploration of the deep connections between humans and trees. Her installation will transform recycled paper into a suspended canopy of hand-cut leaves, echoing the beauty of a living forest.
